1. Shoot Right After a Nap or Meal

Toddlers are calmer and more cooperative when they're rested and fed. A cranky, overtired toddler makes for a much harder shoot than a well-rested one who just had a snack.

2. Get Down to Their Eye Level

Crouch or sit on the floor instead of shooting from above. Photos taken at a toddler's eye level feel more personal and connected than ones looking down at them.

3. Use a Favourite Toy as a Distraction

Holding a favourite toy just behind the camera often earns you a genuine, curious expression. It works far better than asking a toddler to "smile" on command, which rarely looks natural.

4. Let Them Move — Don't Chase Stillness

Toddlers rarely hold a pose, so work with their energy instead of against it. Some of the best contest-winning photos are candid shots of a toddler mid-laugh, mid-run, or mid-splash rather than a posed sit-still shot.

5. Take Far More Photos Than You Think You Need

Burst mode or several quick shots in a row dramatically increase your odds of catching one perfect, unposed moment. Toddler expressions change in a fraction of a second — volume is your best tool.

6. Keep the Outfit Simple

A plain or softly coloured outfit keeps the focus on your toddler's face and expression rather than competing patterns or logos. Simple almost always photographs better than busy.

7. Use Natural Light, Indoors or Out

Position your toddler facing a window or shoot outdoors in early morning or late afternoon light. Avoid direct overhead sun, which creates harsh shadows and makes toddlers squint.

8. Involve a Sibling or Parent Just Out of Frame

A parent or sibling standing just behind the camera, making sounds or funny faces, often gets the most genuine reaction of the whole session — and that authenticity is exactly what voters respond to.

Bonus: Don't Aim for Perfect, Aim for Real

It's tempting to keep retaking a shot until everything looks "just right," but with toddlers, the imperfect, in-between moments are usually the ones that end up winning votes. A slightly messy hairstyle paired with a huge, genuine laugh will almost always beat a perfectly styled photo with a forced expression.
